Travessa das Taipas

Street Photography Now (III): Bruce Gilden

b. Brooklyn, New York, 1946, lives in New York City

'I am showing a slice of life that on several years won't be there any longer. Many of the people that I photograph are people who have a certain individuality in the way they walk, the way they dress, the way they look. But the world is getting smaller and smaller, so people tend to look more alike, dress more alike. All of these differences are disappearing, and it's making it tougher to find people to photograph.'

Magnum 50 years at the front line of history

As I've previously told you here, I plan to share some passages from this book. Let's start with chapter 1.

"PHOTOGRAPHERS LIKE to joke that becoming a member of Magnum is tantamount, in the rigour of the initiation, to joining a religious order."

"The annual convocation of Magnum photographers takes place towards the end of June each year, rotating between the major Magnum offices in New York, Paris and London. Part business meeting, part social gathering, part therapy session, part family reunion, part tedious debating chamber, it is axiomatic that it is held against a background of crisis, since Magnum is always embroiled in a crisis of some kind, and it is almost a tradition that at one point or another the meeting will deteriorate into a furious shouting match, if not worse".

When Mapplethorpe died at the age of 42, he was considered one of the most important photographers of his time. This is the definitive collection of Mapplethorpe's black-and-white photographs, from the early Polaroids to self-portraits taken shortly before he died.

'It is sometimes claimed, not entirely facetiously, that at any one moment in time there are 500 photographers around the world yearning to get into Magnum and fifty (in other words, the entire membership) yearning to get out.'

In the next months I will share my favorite passages in this book.

Street Photography Now (II): David Gibson

b. Ilford, Essex, UK, 1957, lives in London

'If there is one sound piece of advice, which is to myself as much as anyone else, it is the potential of projects or prolonged themes. It's the equivalent of having a dog that needs to go for a walk. Projects need walking.'

'I probably spend more time looking at photographs than I do actually taking them. My shelves at home are lined with photography books.'
